U.S. Vice President James David Pence said that visiting the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem on Thursday was a “wonderful blessing” for him. Christians believe that this is the site where Jesus Christ was crucified, buried, and resurrected, reports Fox News.
The visit took place as part of Pence’s trip to Israel, aimed at reinforcing the truce agreement between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, facilitated by the Trump administration.
“I am extremely grateful to the Greek, Armenian, and Catholic priests who care for this most holy site,” Pence wrote on Thursday on X, sharing photos from his visit. “May the Prince of Peace have mercy on us and bless our efforts for peace. I am also grateful to the Franciscan friars who offered a private mass for my family and the many Americans working for peace. They are invaluable to the Christian faith, and they were very kind to take the time to serve us at this special moment. I hope to visit the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which Christians believe is the place where Jesus Christ was crucified.
I know Christians have many titles for Jesus Christ, one of which is the Prince of Peace. I would ask all believers, especially my Christian friends, to pray that the Prince of Peace continues to work miracles in this region of the world. I believe we have made incredible progress over the past week. We still have much work to do. But I believe that with your prayers, God’s providence, and a very capable team standing behind me, we can overcome it,” the U.S. Vice President said.
The church was originally established in 326 CE, although the fourth-century structure was destroyed in 1009 by the Islamic ruler Caliph Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah.
About a century later, the site was captured by Christian Crusaders, and Francesca Stasolla, a professor of archaeology at Sapienza University of Rome, told Fox News Digital earlier this year that the preserved church largely reflects the work of the Crusaders.
